Buying Used Cars in the Twin Cities: A Neighborhood Guide

Buying Used Cars in the Twin Cities: A Neighborhood-by-Neighborhood Guide

Moving to a new Twin Cities neighborhood or upgrading your used car? Location matters more than you might think when you’re shopping for a reliable vehicle in Minnesota. Where you live determines what you drive—the roads you travel, the weather you face, and the commute you make every single day. A car that works perfectly for someone in Wayzata might not be ideal for someone in Lakeville, and vice versa.

This guide breaks down what to look for when buying used in different Twin Cities neighborhoods. We’ll talk about commutes, winter conditions, rust concerns, and which vehicle types make sense for where you live. By the end, you’ll have a clearer picture of what to prioritize when you walk onto a lot—and why Robert Street Auto Sales, located right here in St. Paul, is positioned to help buyers across the entire metro.

West Metro: Edina, Wayzata, Minnetonka, Bloomington

The west side of the Twin Cities is beautiful, but it’s also one of the most challenging areas for used cars. These neighborhoods are rolling, tree-lined communities with steep driveways and hills. Winters here are brutal, and the cities are aggressive with road salt on their streets. If you live here, rust is a real enemy.

What to prioritize:

  • Rust resistance is non-negotiable. Look for vehicles with undercoating, clean wheel wells, and no bubbling under the doors or rear bumper. Many of our vehicles are sourced from southern states where road salt damage is minimal, which matters if you’re in Wayzata or Bloomington.
  • AWD is practical, not optional. These neighborhoods have hills, and winter snow accumulates fast. A Subaru Outback or Crosstrek handles these roads confidently. If you’re looking at sedans, make sure they have good winter tires and clearance for snow buildup.
  • Fuel economy takes a back seat to capability. You’re not spending 90 minutes on I-94 daily; you’re managing neighborhood roads, school runs, and winter weather. A reliable AWD crossover or truck might cost a bit more in gas, but it’s worth the peace of mind.

Commute profile: Many west-metro residents work downtown Minneapolis or in the Uptown/Edina business district. If you’re one of them, you’re on I-394 or Hwy 62, which can get rough in winter. Make sure whatever you buy can handle highway miles—good brakes, solid transmission, and tires you trust.

Southwest: Burnsville, Apple Valley, Eagan

The southwest corridor is flatter, which is a plus for winter driving. But don’t be fooled—these are still Minnesota suburbs with real winter weather and road salt on every street. The commute to downtown Minneapolis can be anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.

What to prioritize:

  • All-wheel drive is helpful but not as critical as the west side. The terrain here is gentler. A solid front-wheel-drive sedan with good winter tires can work well, especially if you’re careful about snow and ice.
  • Rust prevention matters just as much. Even though the terrain is flatter, you’re still dealing with road salt from Highway 35W and local streets. Check the undercarriage carefully. Look for vehicles that have seen minimal winter exposure—many of ours come from southern sources where salt isn’t a factor.
  • Fuel economy becomes relevant. If you’re commuting 45 minutes each way to Minneapolis or St. Paul, a Toyota Prius or other efficient sedan starts to make financial sense. You’ll appreciate the lower gas bills over time.

Commute profile: Most southwest suburbs feed into I-35W northbound or Highway 77 toward downtown. These are well-maintained highways, but they’re also congested during rush hours. A reliable, fuel-efficient vehicle that won’t quit on you during winter storms is ideal.

South Metro: Lakeville, Burnsville (south), Inver Grove Heights

Head south from St. Paul, and you’re in one of the fastest-growing parts of the Twin Cities. Lakeville and the communities around it offer newer housing but also real commuting distances. You’re either heading north to downtown or working locally in the growing business parks around 35E.

What to prioritize:

  • Reliability over flash. These suburbs are farther out, which means longer commutes and fewer escape routes if something breaks down. You want a used vehicle with good service records, solid mileage, and a transparent maintenance history.
  • AWD helps, but it’s not the determining factor. Like Burnsville, these areas are relatively flat. What matters more is the vehicle’s overall condition and whether the engine, transmission, and brakes have been well-maintained.
  • Fuel economy and comfort for long commutes. If you’re driving from Lakeville to downtown Minneapolis daily, you’re looking at 45+ minutes each way. A comfortable sedan with decent highway manners and fuel efficiency will make a difference in your quality of life.

Why this matters: Lakeville, Inver Grove Heights, and surrounding areas are minutes from Robert Street Auto Sales at 845 S Robert St in St. Paul. If you live here, you can be in and out of our lot in 10–15 minutes, making it easy to browse our inventory of sedans, crossovers, and trucks without spending your whole day driving.

East Metro: Woodbury, Stillwater, Hastings

The east side of the Twin Cities is a mixed bag—some areas are newer suburbs, others are charming small towns with real commuting distances. Woodbury is a bedroom community for people working downtown or in the business parks around I-94. Stillwater and Hastings are farther out but increasingly popular with remote workers.

What to prioritize:

  • Winter capability and rust resistance. Woodbury gets the same winter weather as anywhere else in the metro. The St. Croix River communities (Stillwater, Hastings) can be windier and snowier. Look for vehicles with good undercoating and AWD if you’re in the hillier areas.
  • Highway reliability. Many residents commute on I-94, which is a major corridor but also sees heavy salt use. Your vehicle needs to handle frequent highway miles and winter road conditions.
  • Truck or crossover practicality. The east side has more hobby farms and outdoor recreation access. If you’re hauling ATVs, boats, or yard equipment, a truck makes sense. Otherwise, a crossover like a Subaru Outback offers good cargo space and winter capability without the fuel cost of a full-size truck.

Commute profile: I-94 east toward Woodbury is a straight shot but can be congested. US-61 toward Hastings and Stillwater is slower but scenic. Either way, you want something reliable and capable of handling winter weather.

Central St. Paul

Living in St. Paul itself puts you close to Robert Street Auto Sales and close to work for many downtown employees. St. Paul winters are as tough as anywhere in the metro, and road salt is everywhere.

What to prioritize:

  • Parking and size matter. St. Paul neighborhoods have smaller lots and street parking. A sedan or compact crossover is often more practical than a full-size SUV or truck.
  • Rust is a daily battle. You’re exposed to salt from every street in the city. Look for vehicles with strong undercoatings and clean wheel wells. Many of our inventory comes from southern sources specifically to avoid this problem.
  • Don’t overlook fuel economy. If you’re doing neighborhood errands and short commutes, a Prius or other efficient model keeps costs down. If you’re commuting to the southwest or southeast suburbs, reliability and comfort matter more than MPG.

Why you’re in a great position: You’re literally minutes from Robert Street Auto Sales. Stop by 845 S Robert St, and you can browse our mix of sedans, crossovers, and trucks without making a long drive. We’re open Monday–Saturday, 9am–6pm.

Choosing Your Vehicle Type Across the Metro

Sedans work well if you’re downtown, in flat suburbs (Burnsville, Eagan), or doing mostly city driving. They’re fuel-efficient and easier to park.

Crossovers and SUVs are the sweet spot for most Twin Cities buyers. They offer AWD capability, good winter weather performance, and practical cargo space without the fuel cost of a full-size truck. The Subaru Outback and Crosstrek are models we frequently carry because they handle Minnesota winters and varied commutes.

Trucks make sense if you need towing, hauling, or regular cargo. The Silverado 1500 and F-150 are the most common in our inventory, and both hold value well in Minnesota.
